The vehicle is now equipped with the Arena-M active protection system, designed to intercept anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
While the Uralvagonzavod factory conducts tests with the T-90M Proryv and Arena-M, T-72B3M crews have already started operating with the new technology on the battlefield. Experts believe this upgrade could strengthen an entire company of combat vehicles.

How does the Arena-M work?

The Arena-M is an active protection system (APS) capable of detecting and destroying enemy missiles at distances between 35 and 50 meters from the tank. It reacts to missiles traveling at speeds of up to 1,200 m/s, even those diving at angles of up to 20 degrees, providing protection against weapons such as the Stugna-P and TOW-2A/B, widely used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The system uses transmission and reception radar modules positioned on the sides of the turret, ensuring wide coverage against targeted attacks.
Other upgrades on the T-72B3M

In addition to the Arena-M, the modernized tanks also feature:
– Factory-installed anti-drone visor, protecting the turret against FPV drone attacks.
– Relikt 4S24 reactive armor, adding an extra 500 mm of side protection against shaped-charge warheads.
The survival of armored vehicles on the battlefield increasingly depends on technological updates and large-scale production. The presence of modernized T-72B3Ms signals an effort by Russia to enhance its armored resilience against new warfare tactics in Ukraine.
